Cresting

Cresting takes its name from a wave as it rises to its crest. The show follows changes in a similar state, most of them driven right now by AI, as they reach into work, money, health and time while the explanations around them still feel slightly the wrong shape. Most of these changes have names by now, and opinions attached to the names. What interests me is the gap between having a name for something and understanding what it is doing to you.

Each episode is a short narrative essay, made to be watched for pleasure. The research does most of its work out of sight; what reaches the screen is a story, with stylised images and narration that holds up with the screen off.

An episode usually starts where the problem actually lives. Nobody has an AI problem. People have a money problem, a work problem, a health problem, a time problem. Where it goes from there depends on what the checking finds. Sometimes the standard answer was designed for a median person who does not exist. Sometimes it fails for duller reasons. Sometimes it is simply right, and unwelcome. And a tidy ending can feel more useful than it is, so an episode ends where the evidence ends - even when a plan would feel better.

There are devices this show does not use. Information withheld and dressed as suspense. Cliffhangers that are never paid off. Urgency the facts do not support. Warmth engineered to feel like friendship. An episode made to look finished because the calendar wanted one. A subject bent until it becomes a question of whose side you are on. They are not excluded because they fail - most of them work, which is exactly the problem. They buy attention with a small deception, and once that is the mechanism, everything else the show says has to be taken on faith.

I write and edit every episode. The narration is synthetic, and each episode says so. The editorial voice is curious, sceptical of technological evangelism and of reflexive panic, and most interested in what an abstract change does to one actual person. What holds the episodes together is not a topic but a moment: something ordinary has started behaving differently, and the wave has not crested yet.
